Scope
Publication

This publication documents a selection of modernist architecture in Teluk Intan, focusing on buildings that emerged in the 1920s with an ambiguous yet compelling identity. Built with early uses of concrete, these structures respond quietly to tropical conditions while forming part of the everyday backdrop of the town. The booklet brings together 20 buildings that are often overlooked, inviting closer observation and renewed curiosity. Beyond questions of function, the study considers façades as the faces of each building. While windows may remain closed, the proportions, scales, and shapes of their openings offer subtle clues to interior life, allowing moments of visual exchange that contemporary façades often deny. This publication aims to spark conversation around modest yet meaningful architecture in small towns, encouraging further exploration of familiar places across Malaysia.
