We called this project 1+1=3 because it is a two-storey house designed for three generations. As one of our earliest commissions, it reflects our design ethos - naturally ventilated spaces and a provocative way of configuring a tropical residential’s interiors. The triangular site challenged us to work with two column grid systems where the central core of the staircase becomes the pivot of the house. We wrapped the existing staircase into a sculptural box and reused old window openings with ventilation blocks. By removing excess walls and floors, we created openness, light, and connection at ease.
